Bad Eyes & Knitting – EDS Makes Me Who I Am!

Having EDS (ehlers-danlos syndrome) affects my eyesight (so I am told) it goes up and down, the last week or so it has been quite bad, I am having a mini flare up so it is not unexpected, although reading and typing can be hard I feel blessed I can knit without looking at my work, if I did not have EDS I am sure I wouldn’t have this advantage 😀

It is partly because when my eyes are bad I am too stubborn to stop knitting, and also even when they are ok I cant always move my arms into a comfy position to see my needles, or bend my neck to see, I think this is one of the reasons I get such bad neck and shoulder ache when it is time to sew!

It is one of those things in life, the amount of times I have wished I didn’t have EDS… but if I suddenly woke up and no longer had it!? well I think that would take some adjusting too! I just wouldn’t feel I could move, because the way I do move is so odd!  and I get stiff days now but as I am sooo bendy would I feel extra stiff!? I am always over extending and thinking nothing of it, until I realise that is why I am in agony a little later, or sometimes straight after when something goes ‘pop’ ouch! Although the idea of brushing my hair without subluxation/dislocation of my shoulder is a good one!..or just brushing my hair at all!

having EDS is a love hate relationship, at times, well most of the time I hate it, but other times I realise I wouldn’t be the person I am now, and there are some things I can do that I would not be able to do if I didn’t have EDS…

Like Knitting! 😀
